ROSE Sessions

Bainsville WI ROSE Session

Bainsville WI (Glengarry District, Eastern Area) held a ROSE Session in November, with involvement from the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Guest speakers represented the 3 sides of the “triangle” that cares for the mental health issues of patients.  The first speaker was a professional who discussed various programs that are available.  Some of the areas she touched upon were counseling, funding, job placements and training.

Many questions were asked by the audience of 33, which included 28 WI Members and 5 guests.

A person diagnosed with mental illness spoke of her experiences and progress.  The third point on the triangle was that of a family member who cared for her loved one on a 24/7 basis.  She spoke of programs available for caregivers and where to contact them.

There were 100 volunteer hours were devoted to this ROSE Session, with advertising being done through posters, newspaper, and word of mouth.  Well done, Bainsville WI!

Gowanstown-Peace WI ROSE Session

Gowanstown-Peace Women’s Institute (Guelph Area) held a ROSE Session in October with a guest speaker from CNIB.  She spoke about the work done by the organization, common vision problems and how they can help clients.  She also demonstrated many aids that are available.  A time for questions and interaction with the guest speaker followed.

Kim Lowry of Listowel entertained the Branch, singing two songs accompanied on her autoharp.  Kim, who is blind, was thanked by Ruth Nuhn and was presented with a gift.

Diane Bender recognized International Day of Rural Women.  Since the “World Conference on Women” in Beijing, China in 1995, every October 15th the Branch recognizes the critical role and contribution of rural and indigenous women in enhancing agriculture and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.

There were 9 Women’s Institute Members and 11 non-Members present at this ROSE Session, with 30 volunteer hours devoted.

Prince Edward District ROSE Session

In keeping with the new "BACK 2 BASICS" theme, Prince Edward District Women's Institute (Trent Valley Area) held three ROSE Sessions on June 3, 2011, in which they learned "How to Make Apple Butter". Each two-hour ROSE Session (one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening) was filled to capacity with 12 participants at each. Ages ranged from 8 to over 80, with one husband also in attendance. Three quarters of the participants were non-members.

The ROSE Sessions were appropriately held at the Ameliasburg Historical Museum, which has a pioneer village. The curator, Janice Hubbs, shared with participants the history of apple butter making and the various ways to do it, from using a slow cooker, or the oven. She had everyone peeling and chopping the apples and then putting the finished product into sterilized jars. Each participant left their ROSE Session with their own jar of apple butter and different recipes so they could try making them at home!
