Statement from the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario

Apr 6, 2017

The Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) wishes to address an article published on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 in the Simcoe Reformer.  The article describes events in 2011 involving a former Member of the Walsingham Women’s Institute (WI), a Branch of FWIO.

For the most part, WI Branches operate autonomously from the provincial level of the organization, therefore, membership matters are normally handled at the Branch level.  The current FWIO executive was not aware of this particular situation, however, in light of the recent media coverage, we have spoken to representatives of the Walsingham WI.  We now understand that there were many details not presented in the article.

Due to the sensitive nature of this situation and to protect the privacy of both current and past WI Members, we will not comment on the very personal elements of this story.  We trust people to understand that there are often two sides to a story and we hope that the public will continue to support the Walsingham WI, which has been serving the community for 78 years.

Sincerely,

The Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario
